How do teeth move?
Braces move your teeth through continuous, gentle pressure over time. Braces consist of brackets bonded to each tooth, connected by an archwire. This archwire exerts pressure to align the teeth. Elastic ligatures, metal bands, and tubes help secure the archwire and direct tooth movement.
The periodontal ligament around each tooth experiences pressure from braces, which triggers a biological response that breaks down bone on one side and builds it up on the other, allowing the tooth to move. Regular orthodontic adjustments ensure optimal pressure and movement.
After active treatment, retainers are used to maintain the new tooth positions while the surrounding bone and tissues stabilize. The entire process can take several months to a few years, depending on individual needs.
Free NHS braces
NHS orthodontic treatment is free for children under 18 with a clear clinical need and for some adults with severe bite-related issues affecting their quality of life.
The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) determines eligibility for NHS-funded orthodontic treatment. This index assesses dental irregularities through two components: the Dental Health Component (DHC) and the Aesthetic Component (AC). We will evaluate your case and submit a formal request for NHS approval if you meet the criteria.
You can learn more about it and send your request on the link below.
